San Francisco Mission District

SF Mission District

The cultural heart of San Francisco — Latinx taquerias, Arab-American bakeries, vegan izakayas, and murals on every wall.

← Back to Full Directory

The Mission is the most culturally layered neighborhood in San Francisco, and also the most contested. Decades of Latinx history live in its taquerias, murals, corner stores, and community organizations — alongside newer waves of immigrants and residents who have added their own threads to the fabric. This guide focuses on the BIPOC-owned and BIPOC-rooted spots that make the Mission irreplaceable.

Where to Eat

The Mission has some of the most culturally significant BIPOC-owned restaurants in the entire Bay.

1
Taqueria El Farolito
Latinx-Owned · Taqueria · 24th & Mission

A Mission District legend open until 3am most nights. Cash only. No frills. Just the best carne asada burrito in San Francisco, made by people who have been at it for decades. The kind of place that San Franciscans fiercely defend. Go late, go hungry, bring cash.

2
Nopalito
Mexican-Owned · Restaurant · Mission & Inner Sunset

Handmade, organic Mexican food rooted in the culinary traditions of Michoacán and Oaxaca. The masa is ground in-house. The tamales are exceptional. The pozole is the best in the city. Nopalito treats Mexican cuisine with the seriousness it deserves — no Tex-Mex shortcuts, just real regional cooking done beautifully.

Shizen Vegan Sushi Bar & Izakaya
Asian-Owned · Restaurant · Mission District

Entirely vegan Japanese cuisine that has converted people who swore they could never eat vegan. Creative maki rolls built with seasonal vegetables and house-made proteins, rich broths, small plates, and an izakaya energy that is loud and joyful. The Shizen roll will make you forget there's no fish in it.

Pakwan Restaurant
Pakistani-Owned · Restaurant · Mission & Tenderloin

A San Francisco institution for halal Pakistani and Indian food. Enormous portions, impossibly reasonable prices, long steam trays of curries, daal, and biryani. A no-frills, full-flavor spot that has been feeding the city for decades. The naan is fresh and the curries are deeply seasoned. Bring cash.

Cafés & Bakeries

Two spots in the Mission that are doing something genuinely different with food and culture.

1
Reem's California
Arab-American Owned · Bakery & Café · Mission & Oakland

James Beard-nominated Arab-American bakery and community restaurant from chef Reem Assil. Freshly baked mana'eesh straight from the wood-burning oven, strong Arabic coffee, and a menu that centers Arab immigrant foodways with both pride and warmth. The za'atar mana'eesh alone is reason enough to visit. A model for what BIPOC-owned food businesses can become.

Culture & Art

The Mission's murals and cultural organizations are as important as its restaurants.

1
Precita Eyes Muralists
Latinx-Led · Arts Organization & Gallery · 24th Street

The organization behind the Mission's most iconic murals. Founded in 1977 by Susan and Luis Cervantes, Precita Eyes has painted over 700 murals in the Mission neighborhood alone. They offer walking mural tours that are among the best cultural experiences in San Francisco. The gallery and gift shop are also worth visiting. This is Latinx cultural history painted directly onto the walls of the city.

The Mission is changing — these spots need your support.

Gentrification has displaced thousands of Latinx residents and businesses from the Mission over the past two decades. Every time you eat at a Latinx-owned taqueria or shop at a community-owned business, you are making a choice about what kind of neighborhood the Mission stays. Spend intentionally. Tip generously. Come back.
